AbstractThe establishment of relationships between radar backscattering and statistical descriptors of the micro-topography (hRMS = the standard deviation of the surface height variation and Lc= the surface correlation length) has been investigated in many papers in the characterization of geologic terrains. In this article, beyond of those two surface roughness parameters, the relationships of the macro-topography (elevation, slope and aspect) are also investigated in relation to SAR responses (σº) extracted from ALOS-PALSAR images (FBD-Fine Beam Dual mode) recently acquired on ascending and descending orbits in Carajás Mineral Province (Pará state). The study are for the investigation was the N1plateau, an iron ore deposit located within the Province, which shows distinct iron-mineralized laterites (hematite, iron-ore duricrust and duricrust). The research was based on the use of linear regression analyses, which demonstrated that Hrms was the parameter with a closer relationship with σº, following by slope. The R² values for simple lineal regression models between σº and Hrms also showed that Hrms has similar relationship with L-HH for ascending or descending orbits, while Hrms was more sensitive to cross-polarization (L-HV) under ascending pass. The use of multiple regression models involving all of the micro and macro-topography parameters (Hrms, Lc, elevation, slope and aspect) emphasized the secondary importance of LC for the images in descending orbit and aspect for scenes acquired on ascending orbit.
